Joan Stewart reminds us that the media love (and are highly likely to run) surveys and quizzes, especially those that are offbeat or controversial. Here are two surveys and a quiz she found last weekend:
- The Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin has the best restroom in America.
So says the Cincinnati-based Cintas Corp., a provider of restroom hygiene services for businesses. The contest attracted more than 200 entrants, ranging from businesses, movie theaters, high schools and golf courses to museums, restaurants, gymnasiums and nightclubs. If the Kohler name sounds familiar, it should be. Kohler makes designer toilets, tubs, and sinks.
- San Francisco, California is the Number 1 market for wireless Internet accessibility, according to the recent "Most Unwired Cities" survey sponsored by Intel.

The other cities are Orange County, California; Washington, D.C.; Austin, Texas; Portland, Oregon; Seattle, Washington; Bergen County, New Jersey; Middlesex County, New Jersey; San Diego, California; and Denver, Colorado. The Publicity Hound loves these "best" and "worst" city surveys because it's virtually guaranteed that media in every city listed will report on the results.
- What's the biggest first date faux pas?
Ordering the most expensive thing on the menu, having too much to drink, not offering to share the check, or dressing inappropriately for the restaurant? I found the quiz in a paid ad inside Attaché magazine, the in-flight magazine published by U.S. Airways. It's Just Lunch, a dating service for busy professionals, asked three questions about dating, then referred readers to its website at http://www.itsjustlunch.com to find the answers. Unfortunately, I visited the site and couldn't find the answers anywhere. Putting quizzes in paid ads is a great idea, but make it easy for people to find the answers.
"Briefs, Fillers & Quizzes: How to Write them and Why Editors Love Them" is a recording of a one-hour teleseminar that explains dozens of options for using these great little fillers in your publicity campaign.
Another great media vehicle for tips and quizzes is the in-flight magazines. For more information see "Special Report #29: Fly High with Publicity in In-flight Magazines"
